Getting Started as a Webmaster or Blogger

In part one I outlined how I came to be a webmaster and led you to believe that you can make money out of other people’s hard work. And the truth is that you can. I don’t have the space here to go into all the details, and after all I’m not here to do all your work for you, but I can give you a few pointers.

The first thing is to answer that question: ‘Webmasters click here’ – what does that mean?

If you see that, or a similar thing, on a porn site (and possibly other kinds of money-making sites but I'm looking at porn here) then it means that the people behind the site have set up what I will call a Revshare programme. There are other kinds of set-ups under different titles but for simplicity’s sake I will refer to the general process as ‘revshare.’ What this means is simple: if you advertise someone’s site and send traffic to it, and then someone you have sent signs up and spends money, you and the site share the cash. That’s the basic principal. There are many ways this can happen and it can become a complicated process if the site setting up the offer doesn’t know what it is doing. Luckily most of them do and they use processors, such as CCbill, to handle payments who know exactly what they are doing, and do it well.

You will need to have a place where you can advertise the site you’re promoting. And you’re going to want to get as much traffic there as possible. Then you will need to sign up to the revshare programme for the site you want to promote and you’re going to need to have some way of being paid. Some sites use the likes of CCbill and you can create an account there via a relatively simple process – you should be prepared present your tax numbers and proof if ID etc. Although you don’t need to have a registered business, it's best to do the job properly. If you’re in any doubt about anything then the website you’re going to revshare with should advise you – if they don't then move on to someone else, there are thousands of sites and companies you can chose to promote.

So, you’ve got signed up with the site and the payment processor – now you can start taking your tools. What these are, usually, are banners and texts, bits of code for your site, and content. A good revshare programme will come with free pics and video clips that you can use to promote the site via your own blog, or whatever you are running. Never steal content and promote your site with it, you can get in trouble for that.

And another tip: keep records! It’s very easy to get over-excited and join loads of programs, but plan before you do or you won’t know which clip comes from who, and you won't be able to keep track of what content promotes what program.

And a final tip: join a webmaster board and have discussions: check with the experts. I have never met or corresponded with a webmaster (in the adult world, both gay and straight) who has not been helpful and generous with their expertise). Simply sign up for a board and say ‘I’m new here and I want to do XYZ’, and be honest and you’ll get help.

Then, it’s a simple case of keeping your blog up to date, legal, interesting and promoted. Then, when someone goes to one of your revshare sites, from one of your links, and signs up, you can expect to start gathering up the pennies. The more people you refer to your partners the more the pennies will grow into pounds. I now know several webmaster who simply promote others through this process, and they are turning over loads of cash. You could be next.
